After more than two months of preparation, Fudan Fuzhong Overseas
Foundation held its inaugural fund raising luncheon (China Investment
Discussion) at the Mr. K's, New York on Jan 20, 2007.
Over two dozens of alumni, some coming from as far as Boston,
Washington D.C. and Chicago participated in the event, representing
15 different classes between 1979 and 2002.
Fanghua Jiang ('84), president of the foundation, delivered the
opening speech, followed by Ling Liu ('87), treasurer, debriefing
the audience with incorporation status, and Minhua Zhang ('00),
director of fund-raising, who explained the urgent funding needs
at Fuzhong, the fund raising goal of 2007 and the planned use
of fund.
Before, during, and after the lunch, alumni joined each other
in animated conversations, meeting old friends and making new
ones.
During the panel discussion, guest speaker Winston Ma and Ling
Liu presented their respective investment background, philosophy
and opinions on the Chinese market, debating each other and members
of the audience with insightful arguments and firsthand evidences.
Alumni left the event promising to meet again soon. The event

Biography of Ling Liu (formerly Ling Ma)
Ling was born and raised in Shanghai. Her parents are professors at Fudan University. Ling entered Fudan Fu Zhong in 1985 as one of the first class of students that passed Fu Zhong’s own entrance exams. During her time at Fu Zhong, Ling was the class president of her class and a member of the student council in charge of academics. She was also an active member of several sports clubs and academic competitions. In 1987, Ling was selected as one of the four exchange students to attend the St. Andrew School in Delaware, US.
After graduating from St. Andrews, Ling continued her undergraduate study at the State University of New York at Albany and graduated summa cum lauder with major in business administration. Ling joined Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in the New York office in 1992. Ling’s clients included Chanel, Revlon and UPS. In 1994, Ling joined Deloitte Touche Consulting in the Hong Kong office and became one of the pioneers in management consulting in China. Ling helped clients such as GM’s Delphi Automotives and Yue-Sai Cosmetics establishing their China operations.
In 1996, Ling returned to the US to attend Columbia Business School. Ling was the president of the Asian Student Association and was instrumental in raising the profile of Chinese students among corporate recruiters. After obtaining her MBA with honors in 1998, Ling joined Morgan Stanley in the New York office and transferred to the Mergers, Acquisition and Restructuring Group in the Hong Kong office subsequently. Ling represented the most high profile Chinese clients during her tenure at Morgan Stanley. Her deals included the IPOs of China Telecom, China Unicom, PICC, China Aluminum and Shanghai Forte. Ling also represented clients such as Huawei in M&A transactions. Ling was one of the most experienced and successful investment banker in China.
In 2004, Ling returned to the US once again and joined Cathay Capital, a $330MM China dedicated private equity firm based in Connecticut, US. Currently, Ling is a managing director of the firm and is primarily responsible for evaluation and valuation of portfolio companies and capital market strategies.
Ling’s development and successful is founded on the excellent education and unprecedented opportunities offered by Fudan Fuzhong and she would like to give back to her alma mater to create the same opportunities for success for students.
Biography of Winston Ma Winston Ma is a marketing specialist and products structurer at JPMorgan’s Investment Banking Division in New York. He structures and executes innovative transactions and tailored solutions for corporate and institutional clients.
His career started in 1997 when he joined the UK law firm Freshfields in Shanghai, China with joint-degrees in Chinese law and electronic materials. He came to the US late 1997 as a Hauser Scholar at the NYU Law School for the Master of Comparative Law degree, leading to his current capacity as the 2005 -08 term Secretary of the Foreign & Comparative Committee at the New York City Bar Association (ABCNY).
After the NYU law school, he joined the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell as a US capital markets lawyer, where he excelled in structured equity transactions with his strong quantitative backgrounds. To pursue a more business-oriented role, he went to the University of Michigan Business School in 2001 for MBA, and the New York Times captured his action-packed career story in a Sunday Business issue.
Following his MBA graduation and the CFA designation in 2003, Mr. Ma joined JPMorgan’s equity capital markets. More recently, he has become a member of an investment banking solution team across equity, fixed income, M&A and rating advisories. He frequently publishes articles on financial innovation matters in industry magazines, and he has spoken on a number of global conferences on structured products, convertible bonds, and emerging markets securitization.
Mr. Ma is also writing a major new analysis of the developing new investment opportunities in China, entitled "Investing in China", which is being published in March 2006 by Risk Books. In 2000, Mr. Ma was an international visiting professor at the University of Richmond Law School for the spring semester, teaching a course on China's Corporations and Securities Laws.
